Dike Trail No. 1389

The trailhead for Dike Trail No. 1389 is located on Hill Road a couple blocks east of the Cuchara Chapel.

I recently went over to Cuchara and hiked part of Dike Trail No. 1389. I admit the main thing that attracted me to this trail is the name — it's a very unique name for a trail.

It's a wonderful Forest Service trail. I was the only one on it when I hiked it, and it had just rained, so I got all wet. I saw a deer, and a hummingbird buzzed me repeatedly, and many of the wildflowers were blooming.

A view of the trail just above the trailhead.

The trail's name is all wrong, however. The trail does not ascend or follow a geological dike. It follows a part of the vertically uplifted Dakota Formation, so it's not a dike at all. It's a hogback. ⚒
